Bio

Beth McCubbin presently moves back and forth from her studio in Low, QC to an apartment in Ottawa, ON. She has been working in the arts for 25 years; as a visual artist, an objects conservator, an instructor of mixed media, a programmer in artist-run centres, a curator in art galleries, a front-of-house, stage manager and set designer in theatre, and as a graphic designer.

Artist Statement

My art ambitions are focused on and fueled by an attention to our lived environment. Through my work, I question the past, present and future possibilities of the material, social and environmental worlds. With effort to highlight the interconnections between all things, I create works which present both celebrated and undesired elements in our society.

My professional body of artwork has evolved from the handling of many mixed materials and found objects. Routinely I am involved in concentrated ceramic studies and development, and in the building of large-scale concrete sculpture installation. I use the subtleties of form, often figurative, to communicate. My process involves carefully choosing materials and subject matter and weighing them to convey a particular message and atmosphere.

Informed by many experiences, my art is grounded in a regard to everyday materials, in a deep compassion for pain and exclusion, and in a belief in the power of objects. I use art to respond critically to contemporary, systemic issues by creating socially and environmentally relevant sculptural interventions.

Art reflects cultural values, beliefs and identity and helps to preserve the many different communities that make up our world. Art chronicles our own lives and experiences over time. We need art to understand and to share our individual and shared history.

My Artworks, both sculptural and functional, are visual representations of many years as an Artist; in fact, a lifetime of gathering and gleaning of theoretical and practical information. My Artworks are commentaries, reflections, and explanations of our global society.
